| You should just put it back together properly. Usually those leaks up top are very slow. So you'll probably have to drive a fair bit before it would even show up. (Depends I guess on where exactly it was leaking since you don't seem to know for sure...) Were you ever able to clearly identify the source of the leak? Anyhow, if you don't put the covers on, and it's actually fixed, you have to take it all apart again anyhow just to put the covers on! Silly! If you put the covers on, and it is not fixed, well, you still have to take it apart again and the only extra work is the 5 minutes to remove the covers. If you put the covers on, and it is fixed, well, you're completely done. Put the covers on. :-) As for harming the car with the plastic covers off - no - some people actually drive the car all the time with their covers off. I just wouldn't and most people would probably agree. But definitely just idling it with the covers off will make no difference whatsoever. Driving it...well, hey, if something gets between the belt and the crank gear just because your cover was off, I can assure you that you will have wished you put the cover on!
